The longboard deck is a crucial part of your setup. Just like complete longboards, decks come in a vast array of shapes and sizes, catering to carving, cruiser, downhill, freeride, freestyle, and dancer styles.
Cruiser longboard decks typically have between 3 and 7 layers of maple wood, making them perfect for cruising and carving. On the other hand, freeride and downhill longboard decks usually consist of 7 to 9 layers.
Regarding materials, maple longboard decks are the most traditional, featuring multiple veneers compressed together. Bamboo longboard decks often have a fiberglass casing and offer a springlike feel. Carbon fiber decks, although the most expensive to produce, provide a top-quality deck that is both rigid and lightweight.
Top Mount vs Drop Through Longboard Deck
A significant choice to make is whether to opt for a top mount or drop through deck.
Drop through decks sit lower to the ground, offering more stability while riding, and the cutouts prevent wheel bite when turning. These decks are ideal for achieving high speeds. Conversely, top mount longboard decks are perfect for carving and cruising.
Regardless of the deck type you choose, all longboard trucks are compatible.
When to Replace Your Longboard Deck
Many people wonder how often they should replace their decks. There isn't a specific number of days for when you need to update your deck; it depends on how frequently you ride and your longboarding style. Some decks can last for years with regular use, while others might only last for months. If you notice cracks and chips, it may be time for a new deck.
There are ways to extend the lifespan of your deck. The simplest method is to avoid excessive water and sun exposure, which can weaken the deck and increase the likelihood of cracks.
