What Are the Different Types of Freestyle BMX Seats?
BMX seats are designed to be small and withstand impacts. Many BMX seats point upwards and are low, making it easier to catch the saddle between the thighs when performing tricks. There are four main types of seats for BMX: pivotal, tripod, railed, and combo.
Pivotal seats are mounted at the top by one bolt that goes through the top of the seat. The angle of a pivotal BMX bicycle seat can be adjusted according to your preference. Tripod BMX seats are mounted at the bottom and do not allow you to change the angle of the seat.
Combo seats, also known as integrated seats, are seats that are attached to the seat post. As they come as one unit, it is not possible to separate the two. Railed BMX seats, also known as “micro-adjust seatposts,” come with two rails underneath the saddle, providing the rider with great stability.
Why Are Race BMX Seats so Hard?
The reason why race BMX seats are so hard is that they are not designed to be sat on very often. They are narrow, thin, and made with lightweight plastic so that they contribute as little weight to the bike as possible. In BMX racing, riders are usually standing up when pedaling, so a soft, thick leather seat is unnecessary. One main reason why BMX race seats still remain is to protect the rider's backside when they land off a big kicker.
