The kite bar serves as your steering wheel while kitesurfing. It transfers power from the kite to the rider, allowing you to accelerate, slow down, jump, and turn. When discussing a kite control bar, it typically refers to the entire kitesurfing bar and lines system.
There are two types of kitesurf bars: 4-line and 5-line. A 4-line bar is simpler and more common, with lines that are less likely to tangle. A 5-line bar has a more advanced control system and is easier to relaunch in light winds.
A common question is whether kite bars are universal. While not always the case, it is often possible to mix the brand of kite with the brand of the bar, especially with a 4-line bar.
Choosing the Right Size Kite Bar
Having the right-sized bar is essential for a good kiting experience. It's important to get the width right - the larger your kite, the larger your bar should be. If the bar is too small, you will experience a slower response and it will be harder to control. The average bar width is around 52 cm.
Another crucial measurement is the length of the kitesurf lines. On average, this is around 20 - 24 meters. Shorter lines make the kite hang lower and react quicker and more aggressively. Longer lines allow the kite to get higher in the air but with slower reaction speed.
