What is a Dirt Jump Bike?

A dirt jump BMX is regarded as a blend between a mountain bike and a traditional BMX. These bikes excel at racing on dirt tracks and executing impressive, aerial stunts. They are renowned for their robustness, strength, and ability to endure the impact of hard landings.

While larger than typical BMX bikes, these are smaller than dirt jump mountain bikes. Typically constructed from steel or aluminium, dirt jump BMX frames offer a solid and enduring build. The wheels measure 24 or 26 inches in diameter, and the standover height is lower than that of a mountain bike.

Additional features include tall handlebars for greater elevation and wheels that are exceptionally strong yet light.

Understanding Dirt Jumping

The goal in dirt jumping is to perform stunts while finishing a lap on a soil-based dirt track. This involves executing high, aerial jumps and tricks on a track adorned with man-made mounds and kickers.

Riders are expected to launch from mounds, perform elevated jumps, land back on the mounds, and continue along the course.

Though it resembles race BMX and mountain biking, there are differences. Unlike race BMX or mountain biking, where speed is the focus, dirt jumping prioritizes executing tricks with flair. Consequently, the jumps for dirt riding are bigger to accommodate higher stunts.

The optimal venues for practicing dirt jumping are pump tracks or other tracks featuring various jumps, rollers (rounded humps), and berms (banked turns). Utilizing these will maximize what your bike offers.
