Which Gear Is Essential for Longboarding?
Having the appropriate longboarding gear is crucial for optimal performance, whether you’re a beginner or already tackling adrenaline-pumping hill bombs or performing graceful dance moves.
A complete setup provides everything needed to begin longboarding - fully assembled and ready for use. Seasoned longboarders might prefer assembling their setup with separate components (more details below).
Slide gloves are indispensable for certain styles. For downhill and freeriding, slide gloves with pucks aid in balancing, controlling, and steering direction while protecting your hands and wrists. They are crucial when your hands come into contact with the ground during Toeside Slides, Backside Slides, Coleman Slides, etc.
Ensure you also have a reliable helmet, protectors, and wrist guards to maximise your longboarding experience.
Is a Complete Longboard Right for You or Should You Build One?
If you’re uncertain where to begin, opting for a complete longboard is the easiest choice. It arrives pre-assembled with compatible parts, eliminating compatibility concerns.
For those constructing a longboard from scratch, you’ll need the following components:
- Longboard Deck
- Longboard Grip Tape (Check whether the deck comes pre-gripped)
- Longboard Trucks
- Longboard Wheels
- Longboard Bearings
- Longboard Hardware (For riser installation, ensure correct bolt length: hardware guide)
- Longboard Risers

Longboarding Styles
Longboarding embraces various core styles, each characterised by a unique approach, purpose, and skills (feel free to explore multiple styles - we value creativity and self-expression highly).
The principal longboard styles include:
- Downhill: Specializes in high-speed descents. Riders utilize aerodynamic stances and controlled slides to navigate steep gradients safely, requiring precision and stability.
- Freeride: Involves skilled sliding on slopes, typically blending speed with precise control. It’s more about expressiveness and control than racing.
- Freestyle: Focuses on technical tricks, spins, and manuals, often performed on flat surfaces to highlight creativity and board control.
- Dancing: Incorporates smooth footwork and cross-steps while moving. It combines rhythm and balance, resembling a dance routine.
- Cruising: Emphasizes comfort and ease, offering the most approachable form of longboarding for leisurely rides or urban travel.
Each style demands a specific board shape, wheel type, and setup to meet its distinct requirements.
The Benefits of Longboarding
Longboarding is not only enjoyable - it also offers various physical and mental benefits. Like other board sports, it provides a solid cardiovascular workout and enhances balance and coordination. Plus, it’s welcoming to beginners and doesn’t demand a significant investment to get started.
As an outdoor endeavour, longboarding encourages more time spent in the open air. Thanks to their sizable wheels, longboards easily manage uneven surfaces, allowing you to skateboard through city streets, park paths, or rural roads without much hassle.
